Let's End Get Refusal

An agunah (plural: agunot) is a woman trapped in a marriage against her will because her husband refuses to grant a “get” (halachic bill of divorce). The reality is that every. single. Jewish. woman. who marries according to Orthodox tradition is a potential agunah. This does not have to be our reality. There is much that can and should be done to strengthen Jewish marriage and save Jewish women from the hands of abusers.

Unfortunately, our leadership does not take this issue seriously and does not do what it can to prevent or save women from this fate. Chochmat Nashim partners with organizations around the world bringing awareness and promoting halachic prenuptial and postnuptial agreements to prevent agunot. We partner with leading women’s advocacy organizations and leverage our connections in the Knesset, courts and community leadership. We stay abreast of the latest developments on the agunah front to contextualize and understand the avenues most effective for progress, and then present this information to you.

You can take an active part in eradicating the agunah problem by learning about the following organizations and engaging with their innovative solutions:

The halachic prenuptial agreement is the most effective method currently available to the Jewish community to prevent get refusal.

Chochmat Nashim believes that no couple should get married without signing a halachic prenup.

Like a social vaccine, widespread use of the prenup creates “herd immunity” and sets a communal standard so that everyone is protected.

If you or someone you know in the US needs help in the Jewish divorce process, call ORA.

The International Young Israel Movement in Israel is a leader in halachic prenuptial and postnuptial agreements. Contact them to arrange an individual or group signing! “The Agreement of Mutual Respect” is available in an international version in five languages.
You can also sign it if you are already married! Find out about the post nup here.

The Center for Women’s Justice is a legal advocacy group tackling the agunah problem via civil and halachic solutions, such as convening private rabbinic divorce courts and creating the most comprehensive halachic prenup to date.

Yad L’isha is a Legal Aid Center and Hotline providing women agunot with the free legal representation, mediation and social support services.

ITIM helps people navigate the religious authorities’ bureaucracy in Israel.
